KERRY LANDON-LANE

Landon-Lane exhibited with the NEW ZEALAND ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS in the NATIONAL ART GALLERY in Wellington New Zealand in 1968. His painting hung on the main wall and was given critical acclaim for being abstract. Landon-Lane was 16 years old.

“FABRIC GRAPHICS” was a one man show by Landon-Lane. The exhibition of bold imagery and color opened at Antipodes Gallery in Wellington New Zealand in 1970. The work was later presented with an interior design house in Auckland New Zealand.

Early 70’s Landon-Lane studied at the Auckland School of Architecture New Zealand. In 1980 began living permanently in the United Sates and became a fashion designer. Landon-Lane designed and produced collections of clothing for both men and women under his name. He sold to Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney’s and Bloomingdales as well as specialty boutiques Wilkes Bashford and Henri Bendel.

90’s Landon-Lane designed Australian Outback Collection and represented them in the NEW YORK DESIGNERS COLLECTIVE and was later accepted into the collective with his own label. Landon-Lane showed a collection at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Manhattan. Later that year was honored with a reception at the Consulate General of New Zealand in New York. Here he collaborated with writer Witi Ihimaera (The Whale Rider).

Landon-Lane was recognized particularly for his distinctive outerwear and featured in GQ magazine adjacent Georgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre and Calvin Klein. His work was often reviewed in Women’s Wear Daily and DNR.

Landon-Lane was always concerned with the ART OF CLOTHING rather than fashion. And like Comme des Garcons and Ferre, Landon-Lane believed clothing to be PERSONALIZED ARCHITECTURE. An extension of personality and expression to a social world.

Clothing to Landon-Lane could also tell a story. And hence he invented a collection of clothing, accessories and accoutrements under the title “The Story Of Trains”. He adopted and adapted subjects and themes drawn from time, history and geography of a great America.

More recently Landon-Lane has returned to architecture. Approaching the subject deliberately void of buildings and so separating architecture from confusion with both sculpture and featurism. His exhibition DRAWING UPON ARCHITECTURE opened at WITZIG May 2018.

WITZIG is the 21 acre property in Fairfield County now owned by Landon-Lane and provided much of the subject matter for his study - the shape of the land, water and veggie bits.

Landon-Lane’s new considerations are people, cows and perhaps Pinocchio’s nose. All these subjects create their own architecture by their existence, movements, personalities and behaviors.

DANIEL LAND

Land has craftsmanship in his blood. Four generations of Lands worked with the finer aspects of timber. At age seven young Daniel Land was equip with tools and a work bench by his encouraging parents. Soon he was building grandfather clocks while his classmates were futzing with birdhouses.

Land’s scale expanded to building big frames for big Westchester New York houses during the day and at night he attended Western Connecticut State University. He earned a bachelors degree in Justice in Law Administration and in Art.

Land was building custom cabinets and furniture when his talent for invention and resource was scooped by Broadway New York City. He worked for Show Motion building stage sets that dazzled audiences and did not fall over. Land built the bar for TOM HANKS in LUCKY GUY, the bathtub and dumpster for PRETTY WOMAN and co-worked the sets for JULIA ROBERTS stage debut in THREE DAYS OF RAIN. He also worked other shows including A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE with CHRISTOPHER WALKIN, CURTAINS with DAVID HYDE PIECE and contributed building a massive set for A FREE MAN OF COLOR. Land also worked on the PBS production of political program Great Dimensions.

Beginning 2016 Land worked with artist and designer Kerry Landon-Lane in the rebuilding of the house at WITZIG. Land has an intimate knowledge of many materials as well as timber. Steel, aluminum, plastic and glass become play dough for Land. He observes, understands and experiments. And then experiments some more to achieve new applications and new conjunctions. The what and how a new design can be built and like his sets for the stage stand up and perform. The creative alliance of Land and Landon-Lane has resulted in distinctive and extraordinary design solutions that are simply wow! The Land Landon-Lane alliance is on going.

Daniel married Shelby McKnight in 2005 and has two children, daughter Indigo and son Teagin. The Land Family lives in Bethel Connecticut. Land was born in the USA in 1977.
